Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies
Yale School of Forestry & Environmental StudiesNov 28, 2011

For someone who is looking to merge graduate studies with a career caring for the environment, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies may provide the perfect fit. The various programs of study offered by the School are based on the principle that environmental studies and the well-being of the people that call our planet home are closely linked. Also, understanding the effects of our impact on our world empowers us to take better care of it. It's a big, bold mission led by professors who are experts, leaders and policymakers in their fields and championed by a school that has roots in environmental causes reaching back over one hundred years. Drawing from the past and looking forward to the future is how the School prepares students to become the environmentally-minded leaders our world needs.

The Yale School began its mission to educate people on the importance of conservation and use of the world's resources before it was widespread or popular. In 1900, as a school of forestry, the mission of the professionals who graduated was to promote careful forest management with the help of the school's founders and the government's Department of Forestry. One of those founders later went on to create the USDA Forest Service. Over the years, the school has undergone many changes but has never lost the spirit of that initial vision: to educate and inspire those that love the Earth to carry out the mission to protect and preserve it. It is with this underlying mission in mind that the School provides such a broad range of areas of focus today, including:

•                     Ecology

•                     Environmental management

•                     Forest science

•                     Global policy

•                     Urban ecology

•                     Coastal systems

Each of these areas of focus are connected to the other and provide students of the college with a strong sense of the cooperation and broad knowledge required to do good in our increasingly socially connected world. In fact, the School currently enrolls students from over twenty countries around the world. The outcome is an emerging group of graduates who are ready to tackle the world's toughest problems with creative solutions and a wide base of resources to draw from. This is exactly the type of person who will be ready to face the challenges of larger population needs, greater need for clean water and nutritious food, and better management of businesses and natural resources. It is exactly the type of global leader the college's Dean, Peter Crane, himself a Professor of Botany, envisions when he addresses potential students in his Dean's message, stating “I hope and expect that those of you entering the School as students at this critical moment will have the energy and vision to help shape our collective environmental future both locally and globally.”

In addition to providing entering students with the opportunity to pursue masters or doctoral degrees in forestry and forest science, environmental management, law, economics, architecture, public health and more, the School also creates learning opportunities through conferences and outreach programs through its centers, institutes and initiatives. Students also have the benefit of spending some of their time in Kroon Hall, the impressive, sustainably designed building that houses the majority of the Forestry & Environmental Studies program. Kroon Hall is the greenest building at Yale, and was designed by some of the world's leading architects. It achieved LEED Platinum certification in 2010 with 7 more rating points than was required by the top LEED designation, and features native plants in the courtyard design, a natural water runoff system, solar panels and a geothermal heating system, among many other sustainable features.

For a truly global educational experience that provides graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to provide sustainable solutions in today's world, the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies is at the top of its class!
