Amber Lotus Publishing sells beautiful, original books, greeting cards, journals, and calendars. Amber Lotus, however, is unlike any other card or journal manufacturer. Amber Lotus has a commitment to preserving the environment that is unprecedented in the paper goods market.
Amber Lotus was founded in 1988, initially to earn funds in order to support the struggling and troubled nation of Tibet. Though they still support projects that aid Tibet, their mission and company expanded to a broader purpose: a paper company that does more good than harm to the planet. They now donate to several worthy organizations including Feed the Children, NativeEnergy, Trees for the Future, and true to their roots, the International Campaign for Tibet.
Amber Lotus is not only eco-conscious, they are actually a carbon-negative company. This means that the impact they have on the environment is smaller than the good they do for it. For example, in 2014, Amber Lotus planted 155,000 trees, but only used 2,305 to make their products. Amber Lotus Publishing planted more trees than they used last year, meaning that they left the earth in a better place than they found it. Since its founding, Amber Lotus has planted over 500,000 trees in cooperation with Trees for the future, an extremely impressive number. However, it’s not just about the number of trees.
The trees are strategically placed in locations that need it most, such as places that have been subject to deforestation, degraded landscapes, and places that need improvements in soil quality. The 500,000 trees that Amber Lotus has planted remove an estimated 12,500 tons of CO2 per year, and will continue to do so for the natural lifespan of the trees. The company itself only creates approximately 388 tons of CO2, which means that the 500,000 trees they planted remove more than 32 times the amount of CO2 they put into the air.
All of the 2015 wall calendars, cards and journals are printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper, which mean that all of the paper Amber Lotus used in their 2015 products contains at least 18% recycled materials. FSC certified paper is also processed without chlorine, like most traditional papers are. Paper that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council is only harvested from healthy forests and non-controversial sources in addition to the high percentage of recycled materials.
Amber Lotus makes sure that they don’t skimp on quality, either. They use a well-known, high end printing company called Sung In Printing. Sung In always keeps up with latest technology, and ensures that all their work has the best craftsmanship they can offer. Sung In is the top printing company in South Korea, and has a well-established business relationship with Amber Lotus that spans 15 years.
Sung In is also an FSC certified printer, which is what enables Amber Lotus to have products that meet the FSC guidelines of sustainability. The Sung In Printing Company also meets the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization, which means that their products are safe, reliable, good quality and ensures that negative environmental impact is minimized.
The Amber Lotus business relationship with Sung In is a wise choice, because Sung In also a member of Sedex. Sedex is a not-for-profit organization that aims to help environmentally conscious and socially responsible global companies succeed in a market that could easily be overtaken by companies that do not use sustainable and ethical business practices.
Don’t be fooled by the large scale on which Amber Lotus Publishing operates. It’s not a huge, faceless corporation by any means. While their products do reach a wide audience, the Amber Lotus Team is composed of only eleven members. These team members come from diverse backgrounds, including musicians, writers, gardeners and bicycling enthusiasts.
If you want beautiful, enlightening card, journals, books or calendars to share with family and friends (or to treat yourself!) consider purchasing through Amber Lotus Publishing. You will get high quality, beautiful products that are not merely environmentally friendly, but actually carbon negative! Amber Lotus is a company that manages to produce lovely and useful paper products while leaving the environment even better than they found it.
