Add Green to your Red, White and Blue Celebration

With your 4th of July celebration just around the corner, it seems like the right time to take stock in a Green, White and Blue celebration.  Whether you are having friends and family over or have been invited to someone else’s cookout, there are plenty of planet friendly ways you can contribute to the festivities.

Start with eliminating your Styrofoam use. There are many recyclable alternatives that are colorful and sturdy for your outdoor dining adventures. Try the line of Preserve Products. Their moto is nothing wasted, everything gained.  All of Preserves line is make out of recycled #5 plastics and are fully reuseable and recyclable after us. They offer a variety of products in eye-popping colors to brighten up every picnic table.

If it’s an intimate function you will be attending, try a full service eco-picnic basket. A variety of sizes and styles are available but the main theme is that they are made of fully recycled material, contain bamboo plates and service wear and chemical-free insulated lining. They come in a 2 person or 4 person option.

Bigger event in mind?  Ever tried a solar cooker for your outdoor culinary needs?  Solar Cooker International has plenty of information to get you started. SCI’s mission is to spread worldwide awareness regarding the options for low cost cooking alternatives that are available in areas with plentiful sunlight and diminishing natural fuel resources. Over 30,000 families in Africa have learned the skill of cooking with the Sun’s rays. Fortunately, the 4th of July offers us plenty of free sunlight for our outdoor fun. Visit SCI to start learning about how you can use what is free from Mother Nature. While you are there, consider helping their cause. SCI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with headquarters in Sacramento, California, USA and an office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Still set on that charcoal experience?  Try the FlameDisk. The FlameDisk is a simple solution to typical charcoal grilling without the charcoal and lighter fluid that is harmful to our health. Also, there’s no waiting for heat up and it cools down in a few minutes. It’s fully containable, so after your grilling fun in done, just close it up and toss the fully recyclable aluminum case in your recycle bin.  No mess, no worries. The FlameDisk is easy to transport and store, making it great for tailgating, camping, boating, and day tripping. Finally, the FlameDisk is much more eco-friendly than charcoal and lighter fluid because it features renewable ethanol. Ethanol is extremely clean burning and generates 90% fewer pollutants than charcoal.

We all love those 4th of July Fireworks, but is that big cloud of color and smoke in the sky really good for our health or the planet? You know the answer. Why not try some fun and safe alternatives such as non-toxic glow sticks, ropes and necklaces. Recycled bubble wrap makes great popping noises and encourages activity rather that solitary viewing of traditional fireworks. Don’t forget your traditional New Year’s Eve noisemakers. They’re not just for New Years Eve, you know.

Don’t forget to keep your recycle containers clearly marked and readily visible for your guests. If your guests can’t find them, they won’t use them.

No matter your function, a few small steps can add up to a big difference.  Happy 4th of July and God Bless America!
