Volvo is guided by the belief that “good design is a way of life, not a luxury”. The new 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid is an embodiment of Volvo’s stated elements of luxury: effortless safety, intuitive technology, and uncluttered design.
Twin Engine Options
The XC90 T8 is designed with a spacious cabin with standard seats to accommodate 7 adult sized passengers. It is luxury appointed with soft leather and birchwood while offering three different twin engine versions to choose from: the T8 Plug-in Hybrid Momentum with an MSRP starting at $68,100, the T8 Plug-In R-Design starting at $70,000 MSRP, and the T8 Plug-In Inscription starting at $71,600 MSRP. All options offer a 4 cylinder, 400 hp Direct-Injected Turbo & Supercharged Engine (87 hp Electric Motor) with 472 lb-ft of torque and their on demand All-Wheel Drive Instant Traction™ capability standard.
Impressive Fuel Economy
Regardless of which engine configuration you choose, the Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid boasts impressive fuel economy estimates, especially for a crossover SUV. The Estimated MPGe is 54, Estimated MPG (City) is 18 mpg, Estimated MPG (Highway) is 25 mpg, and a combined 20 mpg. These impressive fuel economy numbers are realized when the turbocharged and supercharged gas engine is coupled with its two electric motors, 46 hp in the front and 80 hp in the back. In fact, thanks to a large 9.2 kWh battery you can drive the Volvo XC90 T8 for most all of your daily commutes without the use of gasoline. The electric only mode can reach 75 mph and travel more than 20 miles on an electric charge by itself. The car is fully charged in about four hours.
Pure/Eco, Hybrid, and Power
The Volvo XC90 T8 is equipped with an Eight-speed Geartronic Automatic Transmission which ensures that you are always in the proper gear. One of the most unique features of the Volvo XC90 T8 is gear stick made exclusively from Orrefors® crystal glass. A scroll wheel enables you to switch between five driving modes in the Drive-E Powertrain including Pure/Eco, Hybrid, and Power. These settings respond to your driving style, ranging between optimal driving performance and quiet, fuel efficient travel with lower emissions. Pure/Eco for quick trips, Hybrid combines the use of the electric motor and gas engine, and Power offers sporty ride with limited fuel consumption and emissions.
Drive-E, Sensus, and Intellisafe
The Volvo XC90 T8’s Drive-E Powertrain offers the power of a six or eight cylinder with the fuel consumption of the four cylinder engine.
With an emphasis on clean, uncluttered design, Sensus is Volvo’s intelligent technology that is at your command. It’s a combination of information, entertainment, and connectivity that includes a vertically placed high definition touch screen, voice controls, and the finest in sound systems which features Apple Carplay. Volvo’s Sensus also shares data between your car and the Volvo Cloud to improve safety and service.
Volvo builds on its legendary reputation for safety with their Intellisafe Autopilot. Optional features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, 360° Surround View technology, Driver Alert Control, a Rest Stop Guidance function, Active High Beam Control, Blind Spot Information System, Lane Keeping Aid, City Safety technology, a cyclist detection technology, and their world-first intersection braking technology. Additional innovations include their Pedestrian Airbag and electrically retractable safety belts.
According to their website, Volvo uses 85% recyclable materials on every car. They offer an Interior Air Quality System. This CleanZone closes the vents when incoming air pollutants are detected. Overall, Volvo strives to remain the leader in safety and be sustainable in their manufacturing facilities by giving careful consideration to their environmental responsibility in all that they do. The new Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid is a testament to that dedication.
