BMW has been hard at work creating yet another one-of-a-kind vehicle. The BMW i8 is a sports car unlike any other - a plug-in hybrid that drives like a sports car but has the gas mileage and emissions of a compact car.
Now eco-conscious car lovers have the opportunity to own a car that combines the best of both worlds. In the works since 2008, the BMW i8 system contains BMW eDrive technology and a TwinPower Turbo 1.5 litre, 3-cylinder gas engine that together give you the experience of a sports car but the efficiency of a compact electric.
The i8 is, from the outside, just another top of the line luxury sports car. The design is sleek and modern, with a futuristic appearance as well. The car is low and wide, with exact contours and highly efficient aerodynamics. The interior, whenever possible, it made from sustainably produced materials or renewable raw materials.
All of the i8’s lighting elements are LED. In true sports car style, the i8 has the singularly cool scissor doors. The scissor doors are 50% lighter than conventional doors, meaning that it took less materials to manufacture them, making them that much more sustainable.
The two-door i8 can seat four adults comfortably. The back seat can be used for storage, however there is a glass hatch to a rear compartment should the driver prefer to keep things out of sight while traveling.
Though the color palette for the BMW i8 is somewhat limited, it certainly is elegant in any of the combinations. The prominent colors are white with a pearl effect, two different grays and classic black. The car is also available in an icy “Protonic Blue” color.
Just because the i8 is ecofriendly doesn’t mean it isn’t fast. With a top speed of 155 mph, precise steering and “on-a-dime” brakes, anyone who drives it is likely to forget it’s a hybrid within seconds. 357 horsepower and merely 3.8 seconds from zero to sixty will do that to a person.
This car is not only fast, sleek and ecofriendly, but it’s also safe. The BMW i8 is equipped with driver assistance and will alert the driver if a pedestrian or vehicle comes too close to the vehicle and will automatically slow down the car. The i8 also has the BMW Head Up display, which projects pertinent information directly into your field of vision on the windshield.
Of course, at almost $140,000 base price, it’s likely that if a sports car aficionado can afford the i8, the driver is probably used to a certain amount of opulence. A pleasant surprise for those who travel frequently is in store when you purchase the i8; Louis Vuitton has designed a set of luggage specifically for this car. It is made out of the same carbon fibers as the material on the interior of the car, making it a perfect match.
While the BMW i8 can seat four adults comfortably, the real major feat that BMW has accomplished is the successful melding of luxury, efficiency and beauty. From the space-ship doors to the hybrid engine, the BMW i8 is a technological and ecological marvel!
