The name Sundance may spark recognition, especially for you indie movie buffs or fans of actor Robert Redford. The name has become synonymous with the Film Festival held every year to promote and support independent filmmaking. However, many don’t realize that Sundance began with the purchase of some land at the base of Mount Timpanogos in 1969 by actor Robert Redford, and has only become the Sundance we know today because he wisely disregarded advice to turn it into development property. In keeping with his beliefs and values, Redford instead used the land to promote both environmental conservation and artistic expression. Today, guests have the chance to experience the beauty of the Wasatch Mountain region during their stay at Sundance Resort.
Sundance Resort is not a typical Utah ski resort. In contrast to the other busy ski areas located throughout the state, Sundance Resort offers guests a quiet place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the surrounding beauty. The resort is uniquely suited to families, with fun activities from skiing to dining, soothing spa visits to art classes. Guests stay in their choice of accommodations, from the modest yet homey standard rooms and studios, to the suites and lofts, all the way to private and cozy Mountain homes with full kitchens. All lodging accommodations feature the resort’s signature rustic exposed wood décor accented with traditional Native American accessories and colors.
All rooms at Sundance Resort, from the single standard room to the luxurious suites, offer the best in amenities and environmentally friendly policies. Guests have access to in-room Wi-Fi and organic Sprout Out skin and hair products. Larger rooms and suites boast amenities such as fireplaces, balconies with breathtaking vistas, and kitchen areas. Mountain homes also offer hot tubs and spectacular floor to ceiling windows. The Resort is able to offer breathtaking mountain and forest vistas right at your door because of their long-standing commitment to ecologically friendly operation.
Back when the property was first purchased, owner Robert Redford envisioned a haven where the Earth was protected and cared for. Today, Sundance Resort follows those principals using the latest technologies and green innovations. Guests can pitch in with the linen reuse program and the recycling program. All of Sundance’s glass is recycled using the resort’s own glass works kiln, where artisans turn the waste glass into art or practical items to be used throughout the resort. Resort rooms are cleaned with non-toxic supplies, and the rooms also receive organic soap made on-site at the Sundance art studio, in addition to the complimentary Sprout Out products.
Sundance has also set up a system to offset 100% of the resort’s power usage by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits through wind power. The facility buys wind energy from farms in nearby states, and while the cost may be a little higher than traditional power, the resort believes the environmental benefits far outweigh monetary costs. By purchasing the wind credits, the resort can effectively remove over 1,300 metric tons of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere every year, and reduce the resort’s carbon footprint significantly. Sundance also has a Green Team, a committee of employees responsible for promoting sustainability and taking action on behalf of the environment throughout all of Sundance’s facilities.
Guests of Sundance Resort will find plenty to do during their stay. Active pursuits include downhill skiing and snowboarding, hiking, and fishing. Creative guests can make pottery or jewelry. Food connoisseurs will love the fresh, local, organic fare offered at the Resort in the Tree Room or the Foundry Grill, where creating delicious meals is as much an art as the collection of fine art paintings on the walls. The Spa at Sundance offers guests soothing, invigorating treatments based on traditional Native American treatments. Don’t forget to leave plenty of time to enjoy the cozy ambiance of your room as you sit by a crackling fire, or to take in the view from your deck or balcony.
Robert Redford intended Sundance to be an inspiration for ideas, both artistic and environmental, and it has evolved to become just that. Sundance Resort is the hub where you can enjoy everything the Sundance family of companies has to offer. It’s the perfect intersection of art, nature, and recreation, and it awaits anyone who seeks to find their place in the Sundance experience.
